Black Men Redefining Love & Romance This Valentine’s Day

Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell’s recent engagement to Grammy-winning singer-actress Coco Jones signals a broader shift in how Black men approach romance and partnership, moving away from prescribed gestures toward more authentic expressions of love.

Mitchell and Jones announced their engagement on July 11, 2025, following the conclusion of Mitchell’s NBA season and the release of Jones’ debut album, Why Not More? Mitchell proposed during a vacation at a tropical seaside resort, sharing a video of the moment on social media. Jones subsequently posted a photo of her diamond engagement ring.

“She’s amazing. She’s an amazing human being. She brings me peace,” Mitchell told PEOPLE magazine, describing his fiancée. “She’s a special human. And you see it in her work, and to be able to call her my fiancée, my wife, is a blessing. So, I’m grateful.”

This engagement, along with those of other prominent Black athletes, reflects a growing trend of openly embracing commitment and affection. New York Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns and Jordyn Woods announced their engagement on Christmas Day 2025, proposing on the rooftop of Overstory, a New York City cocktail bar. Towns highlighted the importance of intellectual connection in his relationship with Woods, telling Heavy Sports, “I definitely like stimulating conversation; that’s always been my thing. That’s what me and Jordyn have always had. And that’s what’s kept us always on our toes.”

Similarly, NBA star Kyle Kuzma and supermodel Winnie Harlow, engaged on February 13, 2025, represent a high-profile couple who have openly shared their five-year courtship. Kuzma proposed while traveling on a private jet to Turks and Caicos for a Valentine’s Day and All-Star break getaway, presenting Harlow with an 8.5-carat oval-cut diamond engagement ring after reciting a heartfelt poem. Kuzma wrote in his newsletter that Harlow completes him as a man, and that having a special person by his side has made all the difference throughout his basketball career.

These public displays of affection challenge traditional notions of romance, particularly within the context of Black masculinity, where emotional expression has historically been discouraged. The willingness of these athletes to share their personal lives and celebrate their partners signals a departure from expectations of stoicism and a move toward more vulnerable and expressive relationships.

The trend too comes as Valentine’s Day approaches, a holiday that, according to some perspectives, has not always been geared toward Black men. A recent commentary suggested that for Black men of a certain age, love is often demonstrated through consistent acts of service and support – checking car tires, ensuring a partner has eaten, offering a comforting presence – rather than grand, one-day gestures. However, these recent engagements suggest a growing openness to receiving and celebrating intentional romance.
