Bill Ackman Donates $400M for Brain Research After Daughter’s Haemorrhage

August 21, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

American billionaire investor Bill Ackman will donate 10m shares in his New York-listed Perishing Square hedge fund, valued at approximately $400m (£292m) at Thursday’s closing price, to establish a Manhattan-based brain research and recovery institute following a severe medical emergency suffered by his daughter Lucy.

The Medical Crisis and the Launch of the Ackman Oxman Institute

The philanthropic capital deployment comes after Ackman’s daughter Lucy suffered a stroke earlier this year. According to Ackman’s public statements on social media platform X, emergency responders initially did not know what was wrong when they discovered her unconscious in her New York apartment. Subsequent hospital scans revealed a massive brain haemorrhage, which required a lengthy surgical procedure to remove. While the medical event left her unable to speak, see, or walk, Ackman reported via The Jewish Chronicle that she has since regained her cognition and begun to walk with assistance.

In response to the ordeal, Ackman and his wife, Neri Oxman, established the Ackman Oxman Institute (AOI). The non-profit research center is located in a 400,000-square-foot building in Manhattan, utilizing space that includes repurposed studios currently hosting Saturday Night Live. On the board, alongside Ackman and Oxman, sits neurosurgeon Chris Kellner, who led the team responsible for Lucy’s hospital treatment, alongside several prominent figures in science and research. According to reporting from The Jewish Chronicle, plans for the charity had been in the pipeline for five years following Oxman’s mother dying from Alzheimer’s disease, with Lucy’s brain haemorrhage giving the project new urgency.

Commercial Instincts and Venture Integration

Unlike traditional academic institutions centered on publishing papers, the AOI is structured to prioritize patient-related outcomes, human optimization, and longevity. Ackman outlined that the organization will maintain highly commercial instincts despite its non-profit status. The operational model includes an integrated venture capital arm designed to provide seed funding and spin out treatments and medications developed by the institute.

“The advance of AI in the last few years will also enable us to greatly accelerate our mission,” Ackman wrote to his 3m social media followers, adding that “AI still has a lot to learn about human intelligence and the brain, and the AOI should be at the forefront of the interplay between the brain and AI.”

Philanthropic Landscape and Prior Commitments

The $400m stock transfer represents one of the largest single philanthropic donations of the year. It follows other major deployments across the global hedge fund sector, such as British manager Chris Hohn’s record £1.4bn contribution via his Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, as tracked by The Sunday Times’ Giving List. MacKenzie Scott has similarly continued deploying billions from her divorce settlement into non-profit causes.

For Ackman, whose personal net worth is estimated at $8bn according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, the donation intersects with a broader history of high-profile financial maneuvers. The investor built his reputation through landmark campaigns, including his $1bn short of weight-loss supplement maker Herbalife, where he publicly targeted the firm’s business model. Beyond his financial operations, Ackman serves as co-trustee of Pershing Square Philanthropies, an umbrella that includes The Pershing Square Foundation. According to The Jewish Chronicle, that foundation has committed more than £500 million to areas spanning health and medicine, education, economic development, and innovation.
