Best Hidden Gem to Escape Rome’s Crowds

April 9, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

The Appian Way, an ancient Roman road stretching south from the city center, provides a stark contrast to the dense tourist corridors of the Colosseum and the Pantheon.

While Rome’s historic center continues to manage high volumes of international visitors, the Parco Regionale dell’Appia Antica offers a preserved landscape of basalt paving stones and ruins. The area serves as a transition from the urban density of the capital to the rural Campagna Romana, maintaining the original trajectory of the “Queen of Roads,” which historically connected Rome to Brindisi.

Preservation of the Via Appia Antica

The region is characterized by its archaeological significance and the presence of ancient tombs, monuments, and villas that line the original route. Unlike the pedestrian-heavy streets of the city center, the Appian Way is subject to specific traffic restrictions to protect the integrity of the volcanic stones and the surrounding environment. These regulations limit motorized vehicle access, encouraging visitors to explore the area via bicycle or on foot.

Preservation of the Via Appia Antica

The landscape includes the Catacombs of San Callisto and San Sebastiano, underground burial sites that reflect early Christian history. These sites are situated along the road since Roman law prohibited burials within the city walls, leading to the development of extensive necropolises along the outbound arterial roads.

Management of Tourism Flow

Local authorities and regional park administrators manage the area as a protected regional park. This designation allows for a different pace of tourism compared to the central districts, where the municipal government has implemented various measures to combat overtourism. By diverting interest toward the Appian Way, the city distributes the physical impact of tourism across a wider geographical area.

The experience of the Appian Way is defined by the juxtaposition of ancient infrastructure and natural greenery. The road remains a functional archaeological site where the original Roman engineering is visible in the large, interlocking stones designed to withstand centuries of heavy military and commercial transport.

Access to the park and its various monuments is coordinated through the Parco Regionale dell’Appia Antica, which oversees the maintenance of the road and the regulation of visiting hours for the catacombs and museums.
