Best Alternatives to Cuevana and Magis TV: Free & Subscription Options vs. Risky Streaming Apps That Threaten Your Privacy and Security

April 23, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Magis TV, XUPER TV, and similar unauthorized streaming applications are under increasing scrutiny as cybersecurity experts and consumer protection agencies warn that these platforms expose users to significant data privacy risks and potential malware infections.

According to multiple reports from Infobae and Revista Semana, these apps—often marketed as free alternatives to licensed streaming services—operate without proper authorization and frequently embed invasive advertising trackers, data harvesting scripts, and in some cases, malicious code designed to exfiltrate personal information from users’ devices.

Security analysts have identified that applications such as Magis TV and XUPER TV request excessive permissions on Android and iOS devices, including access to contacts, location, microphone, and storage—far beyond what is necessary for video playback. In several instances, these apps have been found to transmit user data to servers located in jurisdictions with weak data protection laws, increasing the risk of unauthorized surveillance and third-party profiling.

One report detailed how a modified version of Magis TV was discovered to contain a hidden module capable of capturing screenshots and keystrokes, effectively turning users’ smartphones into surveillance tools without their knowledge. Another variant, BixPlus Max, was flagged by El Destape as illegal under Argentine copyright law and explicitly discouraged for download due to its distribution of pirated content and potential to compromise device integrity.

FayerWayer expanded the warning, listing six additional free streaming apps—including SuperBox TV, TV Latino, and others—that exhibit similar behaviors, such as silent background data transmission, unauthorized access to home networks, and the deployment of cryptocurrency miners that drain battery life and degrade device performance.

Consumer advocacy groups have emphasized that the appeal of “free” content often masks a trade-off: users pay with their privacy, security, and digital autonomy. Unlike licensed platforms such as Netflix, Disney+, or Max, which operate under strict data governance frameworks and are subject to regulatory oversight in multiple jurisdictions, these unauthorized apps lack transparency regarding data collection practices, retention policies, or third-party sharing agreements.

Technical examinations conducted by cybersecurity firms have revealed that many of these apps use obfuscation techniques to evade detection by antivirus software and app store security scans. Some are distributed through third-party websites or Telegram channels, bypassing official app stores like Google Play and Apple’s App Store, which enforce baseline security and privacy standards.

Despite repeated warnings, these platforms continue to gain traction in Latin America and parts of Europe, particularly among users seeking to avoid subscription fees. However, experts caution that the long-term costs—including identity theft, financial fraud, and device compromise—can far exceed the price of legitimate streaming services.

As of the latest available information, no formal regulatory action has been announced against the developers of Magis TV, XUPER TV, or the related apps cited in the reports. App stores have removed some variants following user complaints and security alerts, but new versions frequently reappear under different names or through alternative distribution channels.

Users are advised to verify the legitimacy of any streaming application before installation, review requested permissions carefully, and rely only on services that provide clear terms of service, privacy policies, and verifiable corporate accountability.
