Incident in Indore Prompts Police Action After Australian Cricketers Report Harassment
Indore, Madhya Pradesh – An alleged incident of harassment involving two members of the Australian Women’s Cricket team has led to the swift arrest of a suspect in Indore.The cricketers were reportedly approached and inappropriately touched by a motorcyclist while walking to a cafe on Thursday morning.
Devajit Saikia, Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), expressed strong disapproval of the incident, stating, “This is a very unfortunate incident, and this type of behaviour brings disrepute. I appreciate the State police for their prompt action to apprehend the culprit. Let the law take its course to ensure appropriate punishment.”
according to Indore’s Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Addl DCP, Crime Branch) Rajesh Dandotiyan, a complaint was filed by the Australian team’s security officers detailing the inappropriate behaviour. Following an “Intensive Strategic operation,” the accused, identified as Aqueel, a resident of Azadnagar, was arrested. He has been charged under sections 74 and 78 of the BNS.
The incident occurred around 11 am on October 23rd. Police are currently reviewing security protocols to determine if any adjustments are needed.
Cricket Australia confirmed the incident in a statement, noting that two team members were “approached and touched inappropriately by a motorcyclist.” The matter was immediately reported to local police, who are now handling the inquiry.
The incident has sparked wider concern, with Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi commenting on the lack of safety for women, stating on X (formerly Twitter), “Disgraceful. We boast about economic growth, but continue to fail providing safe spaces for women. What a shameful act.”
