Auckland Teen and Malaysian Student Win Apple Swift Student Challenge

May 31, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Apple has named its latest cohort of Swift Student Challenge winners, recognizing 350 developers from across the globe for their technical proficiency in app development using the Swift programming language. Among the recipients are students from New Zealand and Malaysia, whose projects were selected for their focus on educational accessibility and community-driven technology.

Stargazing and astronomical education

Auckland teenager Eashan Karunakaran earned his place in the competition by developing an application designed to simplify celestial navigation and astronomical observation. The app, titled StellarGuide, utilizes augmented reality (AR) to overlay constellation maps onto the night sky, allowing users to identify stars, planets, and satellites in real time.

Karunakaran’s project was built to address the difficulties amateur astronomers often face when attempting to orient themselves using traditional star charts. By integrating ARKit—Apple’s framework for augmented reality—the application provides a spatial interface that aligns digital data with the user’s physical surroundings. The project is part of a growing trend of student-led initiatives aimed at lowering the barrier to entry for STEM-related hobbies through mobile software.

Democratizing AI literacy

In Malaysia, the recognition of student developer Muhammad Afiq was centered on his efforts to improve artificial intelligence literacy. His winning submission, a Swift-based platform, focuses on demystifying complex AI concepts for students who lack access to formal technical training. The application serves as an interactive educational tool that breaks down machine learning models into accessible, modular lessons.

Afiq’s work aligns with broader regional initiatives aimed at closing the digital divide in Southeast Asia. By utilizing the Swift Playgrounds environment, he developed the app to be scalable, allowing for potential integration into classroom settings where high-end hardware may not be available. The project highlights a shift in student development priorities, moving from purely entertainment-based software toward utility-focused applications that address specific social or educational gaps.

Global competition standards

The Swift Student Challenge serves as a precursor to Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Applicants are required to submit an original app playground that demonstrates coding proficiency, creativity, and problem-solving skills. The selection process evaluates submissions based on technical execution, the quality of the user experience, and the innovation behind the app’s core concept.

The 350 winners are selected from a diverse international pool of applicants, representing a wide range of academic backgrounds and geographic regions. This year’s cohort includes 50 “Distinguished Winners,” a designation reserved for entries that exhibit exceptional ingenuity and technical complexity. While the competition provides students with professional recognition and invitations to Apple-hosted events, the primary institutional goal remains the cultivation of a pipeline for the next generation of software engineers and UI/UX designers.

Apple has scheduled the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference for June 10, where members of the winning cohort will have the opportunity to engage with company engineers and attend sessions regarding the latest updates to the Swift language and the broader Apple ecosystem.
