October 28, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

An assailant armed with two knives attacked a gendarmerie guard outside the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade just after midnight on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, and was subsequently killed by the officer in self-defense, according to Serbian police.

The attacker, identified by officials as a minor from the western Serbian town of Sabac, shouted “Allahu Akbar” during the assault and was killed by the targeted guard.

How the Midnight Embassy Attack Unfolded

The confrontation began in the early hours outside the diplomatic mission. Dacic stated that the assailant rushed the member of the Gendarmerie guarding the embassy, wielding two knives while shouting in Arabic. The responding officer suffered a slight wound to the face before killing the attacker.

Police photos from the scene captured the cordoned-off area surrounding the guard’s booth, with police tape restricting access as heavily equipped officers secured the perimeter. Authorities revealed that the teenager maintained a black flag supporting the Islamic State group on his Instagram account, and state security agencies had been actively monitoring him prior to the incident.

Attack Follows Election Defeat of Aleksandar Vucic

The violent episode coincides with a period of political transition in Serbia. The attack occurred just days after the country held a key early parliamentary election on Sunday. In that vote, long-ruling former President Aleksandar Vucic was defeated by a youth-led movement following almost two years of protests against him. Despite the electoral outcome, Vucic and his political allies retain control over the police because a new government has not yet been formed.

Diplomatic security in Belgrade has faced tests before. In June 2024, an assailant utilizing a crossbow wounded a Serbian police officer stationed outside the Israeli Embassy before being shot and killed by a guard.

Police Increase Presence as Security Agencies Investigate Assailant

With the national terror threat elevated to the highest level, police presence has been stepped up at key locations. State security agencies continue to investigate the deceased assailant.
