Milei Government Vows to Secure Release of Argentine Gendarme Detained in Venezuela
Buenos Aires – Argentina‘s Minister of National Security, Patricia Bullrich, affirmed Monday that the government is actively working to return Argentine gendarme Nahuel Gallo to the country. gallo has been detained in Venezuela since December 8, 2024, and accused of terrorism.
“We have not stopped a single day of working to see how to bring nahuel Gallo… we are going to bring him,” Bullrich stated during a press conference at the Casa Rosada. She was responding to questions regarding whether the recent dialog between Donald Trump and Nicolás Maduro included discussion of Gallo’s case.
The proclamation comes as Argentina has formally requested the International Criminal Court (ICC) to intervene due to the “deterioration” of the situation in Venezuela. Caracas responded by accusing Buenos Aires of falsely presenting itself as a “human rights defender,” escalating tensions surrounding the ICC’s Assembly of States Parties meeting in The Hague.
Gallo was arrested after entering venezuela from Colombia to visit his Venezuelan wife and son. Venezuelan authorities allege he has links to “destabilizing and terrorist actions” supported by “international far-right groups.” They claim he entered the country “irregularly,” concealing a “criminal plan” under the guise of a family visit.
The Argentine government maintains Gallo’s trip was solely for familial reasons and has repeatedly denounced Maduro’s accusations as “false and unfounded,” demanding his release.
Next Monday will mark one year since Gallo’s arrest. In May, Gallo’s wife, María Alexandra Gómez García, and their son returned to argentina with assistance from the Milei government.
