Apple to Supercharge Siri with Google Gemini AI
CUPERTINO, CA – November 5, 2025 – Apple is set to dramatically overhaul Siri, integrating Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence model to power a considerably smarter and more capable virtual assistant. the partnership, reported by Bloomberg, will see Apple pay Google approximately $1 billion annually for access to gemini,a 1.2 trillion parameter AI.
The move represents a major shift for Apple, which previously relied on its own, smaller AI models – the current cloud-based version of Apple Intelligence utilizes 150 billion parameters. Parameters measure an AI’s ability to understand and respond to queries, with a higher number generally indicating greater capability. Google’s Gemini “dwarfs” Apple’s current models in this regard, according to Bloomberg.
apple evaluated options including developing its own large language model (LLM) for Siri, as well as exploring partnerships with OpenAI and Anthropic. However, anthropic’s pricing proved prohibitive, leading Apple to select Gemini. This decision builds on an existing financial relationship with Google, who currently pays Apple around $20 billion per year to be the default search engine on Apple devices.
The Gemini-powered Siri will excel at complex tasks like summarizing details and executing multi-step commands, though Apple plans to continue utilizing its own AI models for certain Siri features. To ensure user privacy, the Google model will run on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers, preventing Google from accessing Apple user data.
Gemini’s Mixture-of-Experts architecture allows for a vast total compute capacity while managing processing costs, activating onyl a fraction of its 1.2 trillion parameters for each individual query.
While leveraging Google’s AI, Apple remains committed to developing its own in-house LLMs. The company is already working on a 1 trillion parameter cloud-based model, perhaps ready as early as 2026, with plans to transition to a fully self-sufficient solution when its models reach sufficient capability.Apple is expected to keep the details of its arrangement with Google confidential during this development phase.
The rollout of the updated Siri has faced delays. Originally slated for iOS 18, deficiencies in the underlying architecture necessitated a important overhaul. The enhanced Siri, powered by Gemini and integrated with Apple Intelligence, is now anticipated to arrive in an iOS 16.4 update in spring 2026.
The new Siri is designed to handle more complex queries and tasks across multiple applications, bringing its functionality closer to that of leading AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT – though apple has no plans to release a standalone chatbot application.
