Apple Studio Display: Rumored Refresh Brings Upgraded Ports & Speakers

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

Apple is preparing to update its Studio Display, with newly uncovered code suggesting improvements to connectivity and audio capabilities. The refresh, first reported by Macworld, builds on earlier rumors of a new generation of the 27-inch monitor, which has seen limited hardware changes since its initial release in March 2022.

The original Studio Display was introduced alongside the Mac Studio as a high-end display option for Mac users, featuring a 5K Retina display, built-in camera, and a six-speaker sound system. While the display has been well-received, the lack of significant updates has fueled anticipation for a new model.

Recent discoveries within internal Apple files indicate that the updated Studio Display will likely feature upgraded ports. As Apple’s Mac lineup increasingly adopts faster Thunderbolt and USB standards, improved connectivity is expected to support higher bandwidth for accessories, external storage, and multi-display setups. The current Studio Display offers three USB-C ports and one Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) port. A move to Thunderbolt 5 would ensure sufficient bandwidth for a 5K display at a higher refresh rate and connected peripherals, according to Macworld’s reporting.

In addition to port upgrades, Apple is also reportedly testing enhanced audio hardware for the new Studio Display models. The current model features a six-speaker system with force-cancelling woofers, supporting Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos. Improvements to the speaker system could further enhance the display’s appeal for professionals in video editing, music production, and other audio-intensive fields.

Rumors have also suggested the possibility of two distinct Studio Display models, potentially differing in screen size. While unconfirmed, speculation points to a higher-end model with a 32-inch screen, alongside a standard 27-inch version. Though, a 32-inch 5K resolution may not meet Apple’s “Retina” quality standards, potentially necessitating a resolution increase to 6K, similar to the Pro Display XDR. Display industry expert Ross Young has previously indicated that at least one new Studio Display will feature mini-LED backlighting, further enhancing picture quality.

Apple’s Studio Display is compatible with a range of Mac models running macOS Monterey 12.3 or later, including the Mac Studio, 16-inch and 14-inch MacBook Pro, 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac mini, and Mac Pro, according to Apple’s technical specifications. The current Studio Display is available with standard glass for $1599 or nano-texture glass for $1899.

Apple has not officially commented on the development of new Studio Display models. The company’s silence leaves the timing and specific features of a potential refresh uncertain.
