Apple Reclaims Smartphone Crown, Overtaking Samsung for First Time in 14 Years
For the first time in 14 years, Apple has surpassed Samsung to become the world’s leading smartphone vendor. The shift, observed in the first quarter of 2024, marks a important turning point in the highly competitive global smartphone market and signals a potential long-term trend favoring Apple’s premium strategy.
This milestone arrives as Apple experiences robust sales growth fueled by the iPhone 17 range, particularly in key markets like the United States and china. According to data from Counterpoint Research, iPhone 17 sales in the US-including the iPhone air-were 12% higher then those of the iPhone 16 range (excluding the iPhone 16e). China, a crucial market where Apple’s growth had previously lagged, saw an even more substantial boost, with iPhone 17 sales up 18% compared to the iPhone 16. These gains are attributed to positive user reception of the new models and a reduction in tariff impacts stemming from negotiations between Apple and China regarding import and export duties, resulting in lower costs and increased growth in emerging markets.
The resurgence is expected to continue, with Counterpoint Research projecting Apple to maintain its leading position in the global smartphone market through 2029. This sustained dominance is underpinned by a combination of factors, including Apple’s strong brand loyalty, its ecosystem of products and services, and its ability to command premium pricing.
