Andrighetto Named IIHF Player of the Year Following Standout Season
ZURICH, SWITZERLAND – Swiss forward Sven Andrighetto has been awarded the International Ice Hockey Federation’s (IIHF) Player of the Year award, receiving the honor in a ceremony prior to the ZSC Lions’ season opener. The award recognizes Andrighetto’s exceptional performance both domestically and internationally throughout the 2024-25 season.
Andrighetto secured 34.6% of the votes, comfortably surpassing American goaltender Jeremy Swayman, who received 18.6%. Czechia’s David Pastrnak finished third with 18% of the vote, followed by fellow Swiss player Denis Malgin (11.1%), american Clayton Keller (8.8%), and Canadian Nathan MacKinnon (6.5%). American Tage Thompson also received a nomination.
This year’s voting pool consisted entirely of first-time nominees for the award, now in its third year. Previous recipients include Connor Bedard (Canada, 2023) and Roman Cervenka (Czechia, 2024).
Andrighetto’s season culminated in a silver medal for Switzerland at the 2025 World Championship. He finished second in tournament goal-scoring with seven goals, including a four-goal performance against Germany. Domestically, he led the ZSC Lions to a championship double, securing both the Swiss league championship and the Champions Hockey League title.
The IIHF Player of the Year award recognizes Andrighetto’s contributions to a year that also saw strong performances from other nominees. Swayman backstopped the United States to their first World Championship gold medal as 1933,posting a 7-0 record with a .921 save percentage in stockholm.He finished the NHL season with a 22-29-7 record and a.892 save percentage for the Boston Bruins.
Pastrnak led the World Championship in scoring with 15 points in eight games, earning both the Directorate Award Best Forward and a spot on the WM All-Star Team as a forward. He also finished fourth in NHL regular-season scoring with 106 points for the Boston Bruins.
Malgin contributed to Switzerland’s silver medal run, tying for the tournament lead with 10 assists, and also won both the Swiss league championship and Champions League title with Zurich. mackinnon tied for third in World Championship scoring with 13 points and finished second in NHL scoring with 116 points for the Colorado Avalanche. Thompson was a key member of the American gold-medal winning team, co-leading with six goals in ten games, and scored 44 goals in the NHL for the Buffalo Sabres, tied for third-most in the league.
