AFL 2026 Round 3 Team Tips: Injuries, Ins & Outs & Predicted Sides
Geelong captain Patrick Dangerfield’s hamstring injury is more serious than initially feared, sidelining the star midfielder for a significant portion of the AFL season, as clubs grapple with a growing injury crisis just two rounds into the 2026 premiership season.
Dangerfield sustained the injury during Geelong’s 19-point victory over Adelaide in the opening match of Gather Round on Thursday night, a game where he kicked four goals in a remarkable performance. While the initial prognosis was uncertain, scans have revealed a high-grade hamstring strain requiring surgery, according to reports from Fox Sports. The club is anticipating a recovery timeline of 12 to 15 weeks, effectively ruling him out for a substantial period.
The loss of Dangerfield is a major blow to Geelong, who had begun the season strongly. The club is already managing several key players, with off-season recruit James Worpel expected to return from a finger infection, potentially creating a selection squeeze. Ollie Henry, after being dropped from the side, impressed in the VFL with five goals, putting pressure on the selectors.
The injury toll extends beyond Geelong. Adelaide is facing its own challenges, with star recruit Callum Ah Chee ruled out for six to eight weeks with a high-grade hamstring strain. Veteran Rory Laird is also expected to miss one to two weeks with a calf injury, adding to the Crows’ woes. Finnbar Maley will make his club debut, providing ruck support, while Hugh Bond is likely to retain his place after being a late inclusion last week.
Across the league, several other teams are contending with significant injuries. Collingwood is hoping to welcome back captain Darcy Moore and Jeremy Howe from injury for their clash with GWS, while the Giants are dealing with injuries to Jack Buckley (concussion) and potential absences for Toby Bedford (hamstring), Aaron Cadman (pelvis) and Brent Daniels (hamstring). Brisbane will regain Zac Bailey and Darcy Gardiner from suspension, but Daniel Annable is set for shoulder surgery, sidelining him for months.
Fremantle is facing a potential dilemma with Sean Darcy’s form and fitness, while Richmond has lost captain Toby Nankervis and key forward Tom Lynch to hamstring injuries. Essendon is bracing for significant changes following a disappointing loss to Port Adelaide, with Mason Redman undergoing surgery for a torn meniscus. North Melbourne is assessing Griffin Logue’s thigh issue, and Port Adelaide is without Connor Rozee for 12-15 weeks following surgery on a torn hamstring, and Miles Bergman with an ankle injury.
Carlton is set to be bolstered by the return of several key players, including Adam Cerra, Matt Cottrell, Frankie Evans, Adam Saad and Billy Wilson, while Melbourne is considering a replacement for Daniel Turner, who suffered a hand injury. The Gold Coast Suns, Hawthorn, Sydney and Western Bulldogs all have byes this week.
The AFL season is already shaping up to be a physically demanding one, with a growing list of injuries impacting several key teams. The league will be hoping to see a reduction in the injury rate as the season progresses.
