Bundestag Lifts Immunity of Two AfD MPs, Paving Way for Criminal Investigations
Berlin - The German Bundestag voted on Thursday evening to lift the parliamentary immunity of two members of the Choice for Germany (AfD) party: Stephan Brandner and Matthias Moosdorf. The decision, supported by MPs from the Union, SPD, Greens, and Left parties, with the AfD abstaining, opens the door for criminal investigations against both parliamentarians.
According to an AfD parliamentary group spokesperson, the investigations stem from separate allegations. BrandnerS case centers around an alleged insult directed towards a journalist, while Moosdorf is accused of performing a Hitler salute.
Brandner’s Dispute with ‘Spiegel’ Journalist
Deputy AfD leader Stephan Brandner has been embroiled in a legal dispute with a journalist from the magazine “Spiegel” for over a year. the core of the dispute lies in Brandner allegedly referring to the journalist as a “fascist.”
The public prosecutor’s office in Gera, Brandner’s hometown, is currently investigating the matter as a potential case of insult. Responding to the accusation approximately a year ago, Brandner stated, “I lack the creativity to even begin to interpret anything illegal into the term I use,” effectively denying any wrongdoing.
Moosdorf Accusation: Alleged Hitler Salute
The Bundestag also approved a resolution to revoke the immunity of Matthias Moosdorf, an AfD foreign policy spokesperson who has been described as Russia-amiable.The accusation against Moosdorf alleges that he performed a Hitler salute in a private room within the Reichstag building approximately two and a half years ago.
