Beta Film Launches Sales on French Crime Comedy, Past Drama, and U.S. Adaptation at MIPCOM
CANNES – Beta Film is heading to MIPCOM with a diverse slate of international series,including the French social dramedy “A Lovely Mess – Rob the Rich,” the historical drama “Mozart Mozart,” the Canadian dramedy “Empathy,” and the U.S. adaptation “Velvet New York – The New Empire.”
“A Lovely Mess – rob the Rich,” a six-part series produced by paris-based Redstone for France Télévisions, follows Justine (Éléonore Bernheim) and Rémi (Gil Alma), a middle-aged couple who turn to burglary to maintain appearances as their family strives for social advancement. Written by Sarah Tissandier and directed by Stéphanie Pillonca, the show blends adventure, romantic comedy, and class satire, leaning into the French TV tradition of “light crime.”
Also on offer is “mozart Mozart,” a historical drama from Germany’s Story House Pictures and ARD. The series reimagines the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart through the eyes of his sister, Maria Anna, who assumes her brother’s identity to perform for Emperor Joseph II while navigating court life and a secret relationship with Salieri.
From Canada, Beta Film will present “Empathy,” a multi-award-winning dramedy created by Florence Longpré.The series centers on psychiatrist-criminologist Suzanne and her unconventional methods for treating dangerous patients, alongside colleague Mortimer. “Empathy” achieved Crave Canada’s highest-performing fiction debut and won the Audience Award at Series Mania 2025.
Completing the lineup is “Velvet new York - The New Empire,” the U.S. adaptation of the Spanish hit “Velvet.” Set in the New York fashion world, the series follows a young seamstress and a fashion heir as they navigate love, loss, and ambition.The series was Telemundo’s #1 Spanish-language program, attracting 1.29 million viewers and exceeding the network’s average viewership.
Beta Film will begin international sales at MIPCOM.
