Roman Reigns and King Corbin clashed inside a steel cage at Super ShowDown 2020 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on February 27, 2020, in a contest marked by escalating personal animosity.
The match represented a culmination of weeks of conflict between Reigns and Corbin, who had repeatedly targeted Reigns and his family in the lead-up to the event. Corbin, having aligned himself with Robert Roode and Dolph Ziggler, had inflicted multiple attacks on Reigns, including a controversial ambush following a Royal Rumble match. This culminated in a stipulation for the Super ShowDown encounter: a steel cage match, designed to eliminate outside interference and force a direct confrontation.
The steel cage setting proved pivotal, preventing the usual tactics employed by Corbin and his associates. Throughout the bout, both competitors utilized the cage as a weapon, with Reigns demonstrating his power and Corbin relying on underhanded tactics. The match featured several near falls and dramatic moments as both men fought for control.
Reigns secured the victory over Corbin, pinning him after a spear. The win marked a significant moment in their rivalry, bringing an end to Corbin’s sustained attacks on Reigns and his family. The contest was likewise notable as the first women’s championship match to be contested in Saudi Arabia, with Bayley defending her SmackDown Women’s Championship against Naomi on the same card.
The 2020 Super ShowDown event, hosted at the Mohammed Abdu Arena, was the third annual Super ShowDown pay-per-view produced by WWE. It was the fifth time WWE had held an event in Saudi Arabia as part of a ten-year partnership supporting Saudi Vision 2030. Although, the event proved to be the last WWE show held in Saudi Arabia for an extended period, as the COVID-19 pandemic soon after severely restricted international travel, forcing WWE to hold all events behind closed doors until July 2021.
Other matches on the Super ShowDown card included Brock Lesnar retaining the Raw WWE Championship against Ricochet, and Goldberg defeating “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt for the SmackDown Universal Championship, marking the first loss for Wyatt’s Fiend persona.
