U.S. Special Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff is reportedly passing messages to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in an effort to reach a deal, according to the Associated Press. An advisor to Iran’s supreme leader indicated that an “immediate agreement” could be within reach, though Iran maintains its right to enrich uranium and has resisted discussing its missile program or support for groups like Hamas and Hezbollah.
The U.S. Imposed new sanctions on Iran ahead of the talks, CNN reported. Simultaneously, U.S. Negotiators are too meeting with Ukrainian officials in Geneva to discuss a “prosperity package” for the reconstruction of Ukraine, as announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The current round of negotiations follows several hours of paused talks, during which the U.S. Delegation met with Ukrainian officials. The talks are viewed by some as a last chance for diplomacy, given the escalating tensions and the U.S. Military buildup in the region, which includes a fleet of aircraft and warships.
