MILAN – Jack Hughes, 22, scored the game-winning goal in overtime Sunday, securing a 2-1 victory for the United States over Canada in the gold medal game of the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026. The goal, scored at 1:41 of the extra period, ended a 46-year gold medal drought for the U.S. Men’s hockey team, their first Olympic title since the “Miracle on Ice” in 1980.
The dramatic finish unfolded at Santagiulia Arena, with Hughes capitalizing on a scoring opportunity after a physical contest. Earlier in the third period, Hughes sustained a cracked tooth after being struck by a high stick from Canadian forward Sam Bennett, resulting in a four-minute power play for the Americans. Hughes, despite the injury, remained a central figure in the game’s closing moments.
“He’s a high stakes player,” said Team USA coach Mike Sullivan. “He brought his very best when the stakes were the highest.”
The winning goal was the culmination of a tightly contested match. Hughes’s brother, Quinn Hughes, a defenseman, expressed confidence in his brother’s ability to perform under pressure. “When I looked around the room before overtime, there’s probably three or four guys that I look at and I’m like, ‘That guy is not nervous, he wants to be that guy,’” Quinn Hughes said. “I felt that way about Jack. … Just a special guy.”
The victory marks a significant moment for American hockey, breaking a lengthy period without an Olympic gold medal. Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck played a crucial role in the win, making key saves throughout the game, including denying several Canadian scoring chances during the third period.
The U.S. Team celebrated the win with the American flag draped around Hughes’s shoulders as he raised his fist in the air, a scene mirroring the jubilation of the 1980 team. The gold medal represents the nation’s third men’s title at the Games.
