Breezy Johnson secured the first gold medal for the United States at the 2026 Winter Olympics, winning the women’s downhill alpine skiing event on February 8th in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.
Johnson’s victory initiated a strong showing for Team USA, which is competing in its 25th Winter Olympic Games. The U.S. Delegation, comprised of 232 athletes – 117 men and 115 women – is participating in 16 sports. The American team entered the opening ceremony’s parade of nations before France, recognizing Utah’s upcoming role as the host region for the 2034 Winter Olympics.
Later on February 8th, Evan Bates, Madison Chock, Amber Glenn, Ellie Kam, Alysa Liu, Ilia Malinin, and Daniel O’Shea combined to win gold in the figure skating team event. Jordan Stolz added to the American medal count on February 11th, claiming gold in the men’s 1000m speed skating competition, followed by another gold in the men’s 500m on February 14th. Elizabeth Lemley also secured a gold medal on February 11th in freestyle skiing, specifically in the women’s moguls.
The success continued with Elana Meyers Taylor winning gold in the women’s monobob on February 16th. Mikaela Shiffrin added another gold to the U.S. Tally on February 18th, triumphing in the women’s slalom alpine skiing event.
Beyond the gold medals, the United States has also secured a significant number of silver and bronze medals. Chloe Kim earned a silver medal in the women’s halfpipe snowboarding on February 12th. Ben Ogden secured a silver medal in the men’s cross country skiing sprint classic on February 10th. As of February 14th, Team USA has amassed a total of 26 medals: 8 gold, 12 silver, and 6 bronze.
The U.S. Women’s national ice hockey team is also competing, with a roster including Cayla Barnes, Hannah Bilka, Alex Carpenter, Kendall Coyne Schofield, Britta Curl-Salemme, Joy Dunne, Laila Edwards, Aerin Frankel, Rory Guilday, and others. The team’s performance remains a key focus for American fans.
