Basant Hamida, an Egyptian sprinter, secured a gold medal in the 60m sprint at the Karlsruhe International Athletics Meeting in Germany on February 16, 2026, finishing with a time of 7.97 seconds, marking a significant achievement for Egyptian athletics.

The victory comes as part of a successful February for Egyptian women in sports, according to Minister of Youth and Sports Gawhar Nabil. Nabil also congratulated Yasmina Issa of the Egyptian Badminton Federation on winning a silver medal in the women’s doubles competition at the World Para Badminton Championships in Bahrain. Issa’s accomplishment is particularly noteworthy as she became the first Egyptian and Arab player to medal at the World Para Badminton Championships.

Further accolades were earned by Nour al-Sherbini, who won the Windy City Open women’s squash title, and Safaa Suleiman, who claimed a silver medal at the European Open Judo Championships, also held in Germany. Minister Nabil lauded these achievements as demonstrations of Egyptian champions’ dedication to excellence and contributions to Egypt’s standing in their respective sports.

Hamida, born September 28, 1996, currently holds the Egyptian national records in both the 100m (11.02 seconds) and 200m (22.41 seconds). She previously achieved a record time of 11.10s in the 100m at the 2022 Mediterranean Games in Algeria and a time of 22.47s in the 200m at the 2023 FBK Athletics Championships in the Netherlands.

In April 2025, Hamida set a new national record in the 400m sprint at the Golden Tour of the World Athletics Forums in Gaborone, Botswana. At the Internationale Citta di Lucca Athletics Meeting in Italy, she won gold in the women’s 400m race with a time of 51.29 seconds, establishing a new meeting record.

Hamida’s success is further distinguished by her family’s athletic background; her younger brothers, Bassem Hemeida and Seif Heneida, compete internationally for Qatar in hurdling and pole vaulting, respectively.
