Inclusive Judo Event: Visually Impaired, Deaf & Intellectual Disability – Online & In-Person Participation

Three organizations representing athletes with visual impairments, intellectual disabilities, and physical disabilities will hold a joint event on February 16, 2026, offering both in-person and online participation via Zoom. This marks the first collaborative effort of its kind between the groups.

The event builds on existing frameworks for adaptive judo. Para judo, catering to athletes with visual impairments, is already a recognized Paralympic discipline. Judo for the blind relies on the same core skills and tactics as traditional judo, with athletes utilizing heightened senses and instincts to compete, and competitors are categorized into weight classes – six for women and seven for men, according to the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA).

A key adaptation in visually impaired judo involves maintaining physical contact with the opponent. Matches are halted and restarted if contact is broken, ensuring fair play and athlete safety. The U.S. Association of Blind Athletes (USABA) highlights this rule as the primary difference between able-bodied and visually impaired judo.

Whereas para judo for visually impaired athletes has a more established presence, including scientific literature and professional competition, the inclusion of judokas with intellectual disabilities is also gaining attention. Research indicates a growing interest in adapting judo to accommodate a wider range of cognitive abilities. The source material suggests a division within judo based on disability type, categorizing athletes into those with physical disabilities and those with intellectual disabilities.

The event’s organizers have not yet publicly detailed the specific agenda or goals of the joint session. No statements have been released regarding long-term plans for collaboration or expansion of inclusive judo programs. Further details regarding registration and participation are available through pre-registration channels.
