Mexico learned it’s path through teh 2026 FIFA World Cup today, landing in Group A alongside South Korea and South Africa, with a final opponent to be persistent.The draw, held in Mexico City, sets the stage for El Tri as they prepare to compete on home soil in a landmark tournament.
As a co-host nation alongside the United States and Canada, Mexico automatically secured its 18th World Cup berth. This will be a record third time hosting the global competition, following successful tournaments in 1970 and 1986. The expanded 48-team format promises a new level of competition, unfolding from June 11 to July 19 across all three host countries.
Currently under the leadership of Javier Aguirre, appointed in July 2024, Mexico aims to capitalize on home-field advantage. Aguirre’s previous tenures with the national team were marked by triumphs in the 2025 Concacaf Nations league and the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup.
Captain Edson Álvarez will lead the squad, with players like Obed Vargas of Seattle sounders FC and Hirving “Chucky” lozano of San Diego FC vying for crucial roles in the final roster.
The 2026 World Cup schedule progresses as follows: group stage (June 11-27), Round of 32 (June 28 – July 3), Round of 16 (July 4-7), quarterfinals (July 9-11), semifinals (July 14-15), third place match (July 18), and the final (July 19). Sixteen stadiums will host matches, including five venues currently home to Major League Soccer clubs.
