Respiratory Illnesses Surge Across Germany: RKI Reports Over seven Million Cases
Berlin - Germany is experiencing a meaningful rise in respiratory diseases, with the Robert koch Institute (RKI) reporting more than seven million cases nationwide. The increase, encompassing a range of acute respiratory illnesses, is prompting health officials to urge preventative measures, particularly vaccination against influenza.
The surge comes as colder weather sets in, creating ideal conditions for the spread of respiratory viruses.The RKI data indicates a moderate level of activity,with approximately 1,500 doctor visits per 100,000 inhabitants attributed to acute respiratory diseases,totaling around 1.2 million visits overall. This uptick affects all age groups but poses a heightened risk to vulnerable populations,including the elderly,individuals with chronic illnesses,pregnant women,and healthcare workers.
The Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) recommends influenza vaccination for those most at risk, including individuals aged 60 and over, people with pre-existing health conditions, pregnant women, residents of nursing homes and elderly care facilities, and medical personnel. Vaccination is a key strategy to mitigate the impact of the rising cases and prevent severe illness and potential complications.
