Iran to Boycott 2026 World Cup Draw Following U.S. Visa Restrictions
Doha, Qatar – Iran will not participate in the official draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled for December 5th, after the United States reportedly granted visas to only four members of the Iranian delegation, according to a statement from Tasnim News Agency. The delegation was intended to include President of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, who was among those denied a visa.
The Iranian Football Federation has deemed the visa restrictions a “purely political” decision, communicating its intent to abstain from the draw procedure to FIFA President Gianni Infantino. “We informed FIFA that the decisions taken have nothing to do with sporting principles,” a press secretary for the Iranian football federation told France 24. “And members of the Iranian delegation will not take part in the World Cup draw procedure.”
The 2026 tournament, co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico, will feature a new format with 48 participating teams – an expansion from the traditional 32. Iran secured its place in the expanded field through its performance in the Asian Confederation qualifying tournament. This will mark the nation’s seventh appearance in a FIFA World Cup, and its fourth consecutive qualification.
The decision to boycott the draw comes despite previous efforts to ease travel for fans. The Trump Administration previously introduced the FIFA Pass program, designed to expedite U.S. visa applications for international soccer supporters.
