While Loeb typically favors a cautious approach, demanding overwhelming statistical evidence before classifying an object as potentially engineered, the rapid accumulation of anomalies surrounding 3I/ATLAS is accelerating the debate within the scientific community.

Several key characteristics are driving the renewed scrutiny. These include observed structural features, unexpected symmetry, a peculiar rotational pattern, and the presence of an “anti-tail” – a dust trail pointing towards the sun, contrary to typical cometary behavior. Moreover, the object’s spectral composition and motion exhibit deviations that current models struggle to fully explain.

From a planetary defense standpoint, the implications are significant. NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the United States Space Force are not only tracking the object’s trajectory but also monitoring for continued non-gravitational acceleration, which could indicate internal forces influencing its path. the continued mirroring of anti-tail behavior with Comet R2 SWAN is also raising concerns and prompting a reassessment of existing assumptions.

The central question now is whether these anomalies reach the threshold for a Level 5 rating on the Loeb Scale, signifying a mathematically non-negligible possibility of a technological origin.
