jakarta - The possibility of Giovanni van Bronckhorst leading the Indonesian National Team is gaining traction, with PSSI General Chair Erick Thohir addressing the circulating rumors. The search for a new head coach began last month following the dismissal of Patrick Kluivert after the national team failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Van Bronckhorst, currently an assistant manager at Liverpool, has emerged as a potential candidate, fueled by his Indonesian heritage through his father from Maluku. Reports suggest Liverpool is prepared to negotiate with PSSI should the organization pursue the appointment, possibly requiring compensation for Van BronckhorstS contract which began last summer. He has previously managed Feyenoord, Guangzhou City, Rangers, and Besiktas, achieving a 58 percent win ratio throughout his coaching career.
When questioned by journalists at the State Palace on Tuesday,November 25,2025,Erick Thohir acknowledged the speculation but refrained from confirming any concrete developments.”I don’t know yet (about Giovanni van bronckhorst). Is he from the Netherlands again? I don’t know either,” Erick stated, adding that PSSI is still in the process of evaluating candidates.
The emergence of Van Bronckhorst’s name follows recent interest in Timur Kapadze, who visited Jakarta last week to meet with Indonesian football figures, though PSSI has stated his visit was not at their initiative.
