Melatonin Use Linked to Increased Heart failure Risk, Study Finds
A new study suggests a meaningful link between melatonin use and an increased risk of heart failure, with a reported 90 percent higher chance of developing the condition among those taking the supplement. Though, researchers emphasize the findings demonstrate a correlation, not a direct causal relationship.
“The message is not that melatonin is hazardous, but that we should not assume that somthing is completely risk-free just because it is natural or sold without a prescription,” explained lead researcher Ekenedilichukwu Nnadi in an interview with The Washington Post.
The study, which has yet to be peer-reviewed, focused on individuals who received melatonin via prescription. This presents a limitation, as melatonin is widely available over-the-counter in many countries, making it difficult to determine the extent of overall usage.
Sleep scientist Akinbolaji Akingbola notes the need for further examination. “One needs to carry out randomized studies, were the participants receive either melatonin or a placebo at random, in order to get a more reliable result,” he stated.
Experts also caution that underlying sleep problems themselves can contribute to heart issues, self-reliant of melatonin use.The research underscores the importance of consulting with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement regimen.
