Venezuela Vows to Resist as Tensions Rise with the U.S.
Amidst escalating tensions with the United States stemming from a U.S. military deployment in the Caribbean Sea, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has declared his nation will not succumb to a fate similar to Gaza. Speaking on state television Venezolana de Televisión (VTV), Maduro asserted, “Do we want another Gaza now in South America? … Let me tell you, no. The peasant will triumph.”
The statement comes as U.S. President donald Trump revealed he has made a decision regarding potential military actions concerning Venezuela, though he declined to disclose details to reporters.
Maduro directly appealed to the American public, urging them to oppose “the mad hand of those who order bombings, killings and war” in the region. He emphasized a desire for ”order is peace,” repeatedly stating, “War, no. Death, no. Peace, life and love.” He delivered his message in both English and spanish.
In response to Maduro’s stance, Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina machado, a recent Nobel Peace Prize winner, released an audio message on social media directed at the country’s armed forces. Machado implored soldiers to “do not follow orders,” arguing they are the “worst prisoners” of Maduro’s regime when compelled to act against their own people. She urged them to “Lay down your weapons,” and to choose “the side of Venezuela’s freedom” when the moment arrives, stating, “The decisive hour is imminent.”
