Stockholm Bus Crash Likely Accidental, Police Say
Stockholm, Sweden – Swedish police are currently investigating a Friday afternoon bus crash that left three people dead and three injured as a likely accident, authorities said Saturday. The double-decker bus struck pedestrians at a bus stop in central Stockholm during rush hour.
“According to the elements that we have analyzed at the moment, testimonies and photos in particular, nothing proves that the accident was intentional,” police spokesperson Ola Österling told AFP.
The bus driver is in custody on suspicion of manslaughter and is currently hospitalized, Österling added.
according to Swedish media reports, the driver was preparing to end his shift when the incident occurred at approximately 3 p.m. (1400 GMT).
Witness Linda Contreraz-Elffors described the bus as traveling at a high speed. “We saw the bus traveling at quite a high speed. He smashed the bus shelter and we heard the glass breaking,” she told the daily Expressen. “The bus did not try to brake,it hit a tree or a lamp post and only after that it stopped.”
Police have not yet released the identities of the victims and do not expect to do so for several days. The investigation is ongoing.
