Apple’s New “iPhone Pocket” Accessory Draws Criticism Over High Price, Minimal Security
CUPERTINO, CA – Apple unveiled its “iPhone Pocket” accessory this Tuesday, a mesh sleeve designed to carry an iPhone and othre small items, sparking immediate backlash online due to its price and perceived lack of functionality. the accessory, a collaboration with the Japanese fashion brand founded by the late Issey Miyake, is being marketed as a stylish and convenient way to carry a device, echoing the protective socks popular in the early 2000s for early iPods.
The “iPhone Pocket” comes in two strap lengths – short and long - priced at $149.95 (approximately 130 euros) and $229.95 (approximately 200 euros) respectively. Apple’s statement described the design as ”inspired by the concept of ‘a piece of fabric’,” with a minimalist aesthetic and color palette matching all iPhone models.
“Inspired by the concept of ’a piece of fabric’,its minimalist design completely surrounds the iPhone, expanding to also accommodate other everyday objects,” the company stated. molly Anderson, Apple’s Vice President of Industrial design, explained the color choices were intended to complement all iPhone models.
However, social media users have widely criticized the accessory, with many questioning the value given its open design – it lacks any closure mechanism – and high cost. One user on X (formerly Twitter) commented, “230 dollars for a cut sock. apple fans will pay anything for anything as long as it’s from Apple.” Another joked, “Now iPhones even have sweaters for the cold.”
The limited-edition “iPhone pocket” is available for purchase starting this Friday through Apple’s website and select stores in China, France, Italy, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
