US designates German “Antifa-Ost” as Terrorist Entity
WASHINGTON – The United States government is adding four groups linked to a German far-left extremist movement known as “Antifa-ost” to its terrorism lists, officials announced November 13, 2025. The designation, initially applying the “Specially Designated Global Terrorist” (SDGT) label, carries immediate sanctions and is expected to be followed by a “Foreign Terrorist Organization” (FTO) classification effective November 20, 2025.
This action marks a notable escalation in the US response to perceived extremist threats originating in Europe and reflects growing concerns about the potential for internationally-linked violence. The designations will freeze any US assets held by the groups and prohibit Americans from conducting financial transactions with them. While the groups are based in Germany, the US move aims to disrupt their funding networks and limit their ability to operate globally. The US State Department has not publicly named the four groups.
The US differentiates between globally active terrorists designated as SDGTs and foreign terrorist organizations categorized as FTOs. The distinction impacts the severity and scope of associated sanctions.Currently, the four european groups will be classified as SDGTs, with plans to upgrade their designation to FTOs by November 20th.
