Sony and NCSoft Announce ‘Horizon steel Frontiers,’ a New Mobile MMORPG
Seoul, Korea – November 16, 2023 – Sony Interactive Entertainment and NCSoft today revealed Horizon Steel Frontiers, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) set in the world of the Horizon series, designed specifically for mobile platforms. A promotional video leaked online ahead of its planned announcement at G-Star 2025 in Korea detailed the game’s focus on cooperative and competitive machine hunting.
Horizon Steel Frontiers will be available on PC, iOS, and Android. Unlike previous Horizon titles, players will create and customize their own characters rather of playing as protagonist Aloy. The game is set in the “Deathlands,” a region inspired by Arizona and new Mexico, and will allow thousands of players to share the open world.
“With Steel frontiers, you can step into this world anywhere, anytime,” said Jan-Bart van Beek, studio director at Guerrilla Games, in the promotional video. “Players take on the role of machine hunters, chasing possibility…Your sharing the frontier with thousands of other players, sometimes working together to take down machines and other times competing with rival tribes or fighting over resources, and that mix of cooperation and competition creates moments that you could never script.”
The core gameplay revolves around battling the colossal mechanical beasts central to the Horizon franchise. Executive producer sung-Gu Lee emphasized this, stating, “The core concept of Horizon Steel Frontiers can be summed up in one phrase: the thrill of taking down colossal machines.” New mechanics will be introduced, including the ability to salvage weapons from defeated machines and utilize them in subsequent encounters.
While a release date has not been announced, Lee stated the progress team is working to deliver the game “as soon as possible.”
