seoul National University’s Chang Hyun Lee Named Professor at university of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics
Iowa City, IA – Renowned thoracic radiologist Chang Hyun Lee, currently an Associate professor at Seoul National University Hospital, has taken on a new role as Professor at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics’ Carver College of Medicine, effective September 2018. This appointment marks a significant transatlantic collaboration for the physician, who maintains a continuing presence at Seoul National University.
Lee’s extensive career began with premedical studies at Kyungpook National University from March 1989 to February 1991, followed by completion of his medical degree at the same institution between March 1991 and February 1995. He pursued a Master’s degree in Radiology at Kyungpook National University School of Medicine from March 1996 to August 1997 and later earned a PhD in Thoracic Radiology from Seoul National University School of Medicine, completing his studies in August 2006.
Prior to his doctoral work, Lee gained international experience with a clerkship at Albany Medical Center in New York, USA, in August-September 1994. He completed his internship and residency at Kyungpook National University Hospital from September 1995 to February 2001, achieving ECFMG certification (USMLE, Certificate No. 0-554-661-9) in August 1997.
Lee fulfilled his compulsory military service as a radiologist and Medical Officer, frist at Korea 3 military Academy (February-May 2001) and then at Chuljung Military Hospital/Armed Forces Capital General Hospital (March 2001-April 2004), attaining the rank of Captain. He also completed Aviation Physiological training for a Flight Surgeon role at Korea Air Force Medical Center in July-August 2001.
Returning to Seoul National University Hospital, Lee undertook clinical fellowships and instructor positions in Thoracic Radiology from May 2004 to February 2006. He was appointed assistant Professor of Thoracic Radiology at Seoul National University Hospital in March 2006, concurrently holding the same position at the Gangnam Healthcare Center beginning in September 2006.
lee further expanded his expertise with a Visiting Professorship in Cardiothoracic Imaging at the University of Iowa’s Carver College of Medicine (H1b visa) from July 2011 to June 2012, and obtained an Iowa State Medical License in Radiology in May 2011, valid through April 2013. He was promoted to Associate Professor at Seoul National University Hospital in September 2012, a position he continues to hold alongside his role at the seoul National University College of Medicine since September 2015.
From September 2016 to August 2018, Lee served as Executive Vice-Chairman of the Department of Radiology at Seoul National University Hospital. His ongoing commitment to Seoul National University is coupled with his new professorship at the University of Iowa, solidifying his position as a leading figure in thoracic radiology on both sides of the Pacific.
