supreme Court Halts Food Aid Payments too 42 Million Americans Amid Government Shutdown

WASHINGTON – ⁤The U.S.Supreme Court, in a decision Friday, blocked the immediate release of funds for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), possibly impacting food access for over 42 million Americans as the federal government shutdown enters its⁣ 38th day ⁢-‌ the longest in U.S. history. The ruling suspends a ⁣previous order requiring‌ the Trump management to fully fund the November SNAP benefits by Friday evening, granting the administration additional time to argue its case.

Earlier⁣ this week, a court had⁢ mandated ⁣the administration utilize reserve ⁣funds to distribute approximately several billion dollars to states for food stamp distribution.⁤ This followed a prior decision that millions‌ of children and adults rely on SNAP for food‍ purchases.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson issued the administrative decision‌ favoring the ⁢Trump administration.

The decision‌ has‍ drawn criticism from Democratic officials. New York State Attorney General Leticia James stated on X, “It is shameful that the administration has chosen to take ⁢legal action instead of fulfilling its responsibilities to the American ‍people.”

The ongoing budgetary impasse stems from a failure⁢ by Republicans⁢ and Democrats in‍ Congress to reach an agreement on a new budget⁣ before the september 30th deadline, leading to a partial government shutdown. The⁤ consequences of⁤ this paralysis are increasingly visible, with the Supreme Court’s decision adding to the growing list of repercussions.
