AI Video Creator Sora Explodes onto Android, Downloads Quadruple iOS Launch
A new wave of AI-generated video is underway as OpenAI’s Sora app became available on Android this week, racking up an impressive 470,000 downloads on its first day. This figure dramatically surpasses the initial iOS launch in September, where downloads reached over one million in five days – a launch that was limited to North America and required an invitation.
The Android release expands availability to seven countries without requiring an invitation, explaining the surge in downloads. However, the rapid adoption raises questions about the application’s use and potential for misuse.
Sora generates videos from text descriptions or images; such as, a user coudl prompt the app to create a “golden retriever playing soccer on the beach at sunset” and receive a realistic video in seconds. The app also features social elements, allowing users to share and remix videos, and a “Cameo” feature that enables the insertion of likenesses of real people into AI-generated content.
This “Cameo” feature is drawing concern due to its potential for creating deepfakes – videos convincingly portraying individuals doing or saying things they never did. While OpenAI states it is working with organizations like SAG-AFTRA and celebrities to prevent misuse, controlling the technology once released remains a significant challenge.
Sora enters a rapidly expanding AI video market alongside competitors like Google’s Imagen Video, RunwayML, and Pika Labs, with new tools and features emerging weekly.
The technology offers exciting possibilities for creatives, enabling content creation previously requiring significant resources, and provides a platform for experimentation for general users. Though, experts caution that the ease of creating realistic fake videos could have serious consequences.
Currently,Sora is available on Android in seven countries but is not yet accessible in the Czech republic. Users seeking access may need to utilize option methods like a VPN.
