Ikea is expanding its smart home lineup with 21 new Matter-enabled devices, offering consumers greater interoperability and control over their connected homes. The new products, rolling out now, include lights, blinds, and sensors, signaling Ikea’s commitment to the emerging Matter standard. The integration of Matter simplifies the smart home experience by allowing devices from different manufacturers to communicate seamlessly, eliminating the need for multiple apps and hubs. Users can connect the new Ikea devices via the Dirigera gateway and the Ikea Home smart app, or utilize existing Matter controllers from Apple, Amazon, Google, or Home Assistant. The dirigera gateway can also function as a Matter controller, managing devices from other brands, offering a centralized control option. This move addresses a key consumer pain point – fragmentation – and positions Ikea to capitalize on the growing demand for a unified smart home ecosystem.
To connect the devices, a matter-enabled smart home hub is required. Options include Ikea’s Dirigera gateway or Matter controllers from Apple, Amazon, Google, or Home Assistant. Users choosing the Dirigera gateway can manage devices through the Ikea Home smart app, while those using choice controllers will utilize their respective apps.
ikea also offers a hybrid approach, connecting all devices to the Dirigera gateway and then bridging them to a Matter controller on another platform. This allows for everyday operation via the Ikea app and more advanced automation through other software. According to Ikea, the Dirigera gateway can also manage Matter devices from other manufacturers.
