Title: Ukraine Strengthens Defenses as Russia Launches Drone Attack
Russian Attacks Intensify, Crippling ukrainian Energy Grid and Claiming Lives
Zaporizhzhya, Ukraine - A wave of russian attacks overnight has left Ukraine reeling, causing widespread power outages, civilian casualties, and prompting urgent calls for increased international pressure on Moscow. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that at least two people were killed and a dozen injured in the latest barrage, which targeted critical infrastructure across the country.
The attacks, utilizing drones and rockets, inflicted notable damage to Ukraine’s energy system, triggering electricity supply restrictions in most regions. Energy Minister Svitlana Hryntsjuk announced that crews are being dispatched to restore power as quickly as possible, while state energy company Ukrenergo confirmed the implementation of supply restrictions nationwide. This escalation comes as Russia continues what Zelenskyy termed a “terrorist war against life itself,” demanding a robust response from the international community.
Zelenskyy has implored the United States, Europe, and the G7 nations to respond with “concrete consequences,” including sanctions and increased pressure on Russia’s oil and gas industry, it’s financial system, and those financing the war. He specifically called for new measures to increase pressure, emphasizing the need to hold Russia accountable for targeting civilians.
The attacks follow recent reports of intensified fighting in eastern Ukraine, including claims by Russia that the city of Pokrovsk is surrounded - assertions met with criticism even from within Russia’s own ranks. Separately, Zelenskyy recently reported a Russian attack on a children’s hospital in Kherson.
Norway has pledged NOK 1.5 billion through the Nansen program to support Ukraine’s energy needs, providing assistance in cooperation with the European Union. This support aims to ensure continued access to electricity and heat during the harsh winter months.
