Trump Announces Xi Jinping Pledged to Collaborate on Ukraine Resolution, Trade Deals Reached
WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. President Donald Trump announced following a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping that Xi agreed to “work together” with the United States toward ending Russia’s war against Ukraine. The proclamation came alongside news of a one-year trade agreement between the two nations and a resolution regarding the social media app TikTok.
trump described the meeting as “amazing” and the outcomes as “outstanding.” He stated, “We have a deal now. Every year we’ll renegotiate the deal, but I think the deal will go on for a long time, long beyond the year.” He added that all rare earth issues had been settled.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced Beijing had approved a deal regarding TikTok, owned by China-based ByteDance, which faces a U.S. congressional mandate to sell its U.S. assets.Bessent indicated the agreement would advance in the coming weeks but provided no further details.
The meeting occurred as the U.S. continues to leverage tariffs - and the threat of secondary tariffs – as a key foreign policy tool, particularly concerning China and Russia.Trump recently imposed sanctions on Russian energy giants rosneft and Lukoil, a move that disrupted some energy exports to China and India.
According to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, from December 5, 2022, to the end of September 2025, China purchased 47% of Russia’s crude oil exports, while India accounted for 38%. Trump had previously vowed to impose secondary tariffs on China for its purchases of Russian oil.
Trump has expressed increasing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin, canceling a planned meeting in Hungary unless a “clear path to a peace agreement” between Russia and Ukraine emerges. He stated on October 25th he would not “waste (his) time” meeting Putin without progress toward a resolution.
Earlier this year, Trump criticized growing cooperation between Moscow, Beijing, and New Delhi, stating, “it looks like we’ve lost india and Russia to deepest, darkest China.”
