UK Justice ministry to Deploy ChatGPT, Aiming for Efficiency gains
LONDON – The UK’s Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has signed a £6.75 million, two-year contract to integrate ChatGPT Enterprise into its operations, seeking to streamline processes and reduce administrative burdens. The move signals a meaningful step in the government’s broader strategy to leverage artificial intelligence across public services.
The adoption of OpenAI’s technology, commencing in October 2025, forms part of a wider initiative to modernise the justice system and boost the UK’s AI capabilities. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and development (OECD) estimates AI could contribute between £70bn and £140bn to the UK economy by 2030.Tech secretary Liz Kendall described the deal as ”a step further in delivering the infrastructure we need to power AI here in Britain, transforming public services, driving growth and unlocking opportunities for every community.”
Beyond the MoJ contract, the government intends to establish AI growth zones nationwide to attract private investment and provide upskilling opportunities for over seven million workers by the end of the decade. This builds on OpenAI’s recent commitment to expand its UK presence through ‘stargate UK’, a partnership with Nvidia and Nscale to build domestic AI infrastructure capable of hosting OpenAI’s most advanced models. The first phase of ’stargate UK’ will deploy up to 8,000 Nvidia GPUs early next year, scaling to 31,000 over time, centered in the North East’s new ‘AI growth zone’.
industry analysts suggest the MoJ’s decision to adopt ChatGPT Enterprise, alongside the new local data residency initiatives, could encourage other departments and heavily regulated sectors – including finance and healthcare – to explore similar AI-powered solutions. The government aims to balance innovation with data security and national control as it embraces AI to enhance productivity.
