Snapchat to Charge for “Memories” Storage, Sparking User Backlash
LOS ANGELES, CA – Snapchat is ending its long-standing free storage for its “Memories” feature, introducing paid plans for users exceeding a 5 gigabyte limit. The change, rolling out globally, marks a important shift for the popular messaging app and has already drawn criticism from its user base.
Launched in 2016, “Memories” allowed Snapchat users to save snaps that would or else disappear after 24 hours. Snap Inc. states the new fees are necessary to continue developing and improving the service, which currently holds over one trillion memories. Users who surpass the 5GB cap will receive a year of temporary storage to manage their content before potential deletion.
the company is implementing tiered storage options. According to reports from the BBC and TechCrunch, a 100 gigabyte plan will cost approximately NOK 15 per month, while Snapchat+ subscribers will gain access to 250 gigabytes for around NOK 30. The exact pricing for Norwegian users is still to be confirmed.
“The road to paid storage on social platforms is already laid. It’s just a matter of time before everyone does the same,” said Drew Benvie, a communication advisor at Battenhall, to the BBC.
Snapchat acknowledges the potential for negative reaction, but defends the move as vital for the platform’s future. Users are expressing their frustration on social media, citing years of free usage and the substantial size of their photo and video collections. More information is available on Your page.
