Venezuelan Opposition Leader María Corina Machado Awarded Nobel Peace prize
Oslo,Norway – Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has been awarded teh 2025 Nobel Peace prize, the Nobel committee announced Thursday, october 10. She receives the prestigious award alongside a prize of 11 million Swedish crowns (approximately €950,000) and an 18-carat gold medal.
The decision was made despite recent geopolitical events and political pressure, particularly from the United States. According to Nobel specialist historian Asle Sveen, the committee finalized its decision before the agreement reached between Israel and Hamas during the night of Wednesday to Thursday, having held its final meeting on Monday, October 6. The award recognizes Machado’s dedication to democratic principles and her fight for political change in Venezuela.
The proclamation was immediately met with criticism from the White House, with communications director Steven Cheung stating the committee prioritized “politics before peace.” Former President Donald Trump had publicly expressed expectations of receiving the prize, claiming credit for resolving international conflicts and warning he would view being overlooked as “an insult.” He stated in late September, while addressing the UN General Assembly, “Everyone says I should have it.”
The Nobel Peace Committee preemptively addressed concerns about external influence in mid-September. Spokesperson kristian Berg Harpviken affirmed that the committee evaluates each application “on its own merits,” dismissing the impact of media attention surrounding specific candidates.
