Breaking News: Gaza Deal Hailed, Defence Shakeup Looms, BHP–China Dispute Intensifies
Canberra – A potential peace agreement in Gaza has been publicly lauded by former US President Donald Trump, while in Australia, the Labor government is preparing a meaningful overhaul of the Defence portfolio. Simultaneously, a protracted dispute between BHP and China over iron ore pricing threatens to extend for months, adding to global economic uncertainty.
The proposed Gaza deal, details of which remain limited, was praised by Trump in a social media post earlier today, claiming it would be a “historic achievement” and a “great win for everyone.” The announcement comes amid ongoing international efforts to secure a ceasefire and humanitarian aid access to the region. Domestically, Defence Minister Richard Marles is expected to announce sweeping changes to procurement processes and strategic priorities, aiming to address longstanding criticisms of cost overruns and delayed projects. Meanwhile, the escalating tension between BHP and Chinese steelmakers centres on the quality of iron ore shipments, with China alleging substandard material and BHP defending its product.
