South Africa’s Ambassador too France found Dead in Paris
PARIS – South Africa’s ambassador to France, Emmanuel Nkosinathi Mthethwa, has died in Paris, French authorities confirmed Tuesday. The death is being investigated as a possible suicide.
Mthethwa, known as Nathi Mthethwa, was discovered by a security guard at the Hyatt hotel, according to a statement from Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau. He had been reported missing Monday evening after his wife received a message from him “in which he apologised and expressed his intention to take his own life.”
Investigators found no signs of a struggle or traces of medication or narcotics in Mthethwa’s hotel room, Beccuau said. Initial investigations suggest the death was a intentional act without third-party intervention.
President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his sadness at Mthethwa’s death “in tragic circumstances,” offering condolences to his wife and family.
mthethwa was appointed ambassador to france in December 2023, with a mandate to strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations. Prior to this role, he served as South Africa’s minister of police and minister of sports, arts and culture. The foreign affairs department described his death as “a national loss,” recognizing his dedicated service in critical ministerial portfolios.
