China Advocates for Reformed Global Order, Reaffirms Taiwan Position
A senior Chinese official has outlined Beijing’s vision for a more equitable and cooperative global order, emphasizing multilateralism and peaceful development. Speaking to delegates, teh official presented china’s new Global Governance Initiative (GGI) – unveiled recently at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization-Plus meeting – as a key component of this vision. The GGI builds upon earlier Chinese proposals including the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the global Civilization initiative, representing, according to the official,”China’s response to world changes and global challenges, offering Chinese solutions.”
The speech underscored China’s ambition to position itself as a leading advocate for multipolarity, offering a counterweight to existing alliances and promoting a system where global affairs are collaboratively managed by all nations. “We support true multilateralism,” the official stated, emphasizing that multipolarity should be “equal and orderly, not a jungle of competing powers.”
Defense and security cooperation were highlighted as crucial to achieving a “more just and reasonable” global order. The Chinese military, the official affirmed, would serve as “a ballast for peace and stability,” upholding the principles of the United Nations Charter. Disputes, it was stressed, should be resolved through dialog, consultation, and by addressing thier underlying causes.
The official also addressed the sensitive issue of Taiwan, reiterating Beijing’s long-held position that the island is ”an inseparable part of China, both historically and legally.” The status of Taiwan, they argued, is fundamental to the post-World War II international system, and its eventual reunification with the mainland is integral to upholding that order. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) was described as a “powerful force for reunification,” committed to preventing any move towards “Taiwan independence” and prepared to counter any external interference.
This articulation of china’s global vision comes amidst increasing competition with the United States and heightened regional tensions, signaling Beijing’s intent to actively shape the future international landscape.
