Cannes Jury Prize Winner “sirât” Opens⁢ in Theaters, Blends Family Drama ⁢with Apocalyptic Road Trip

Sirât,” the latest film from Franco-Spanish director Oliver Laxe, was released in French-speaking theaters ‍on September 10. The film, which earned Laxe the Jury Prize at ​the ‍Cannes ‍Film‍ Festival, follows Luis​ as he searches ‍for his missing ⁢daughter in the⁢ Moroccan desert, a journey intersecting with⁢ a ‍fleeing group of ravers and the⁤ looming announcement of a third world ⁤war.

Set against a backdrop‍ of a⁣ massive ⁢desert rave fueled by hypnotic electro music, “Sirât”​ depicts Luis accompanying a caravan of escapees after police ⁣interrupt ‍the party. As⁢ the ‌journey progresses, radios broadcast⁢ news of a global conflict.

The film’s title references the sirât,the​ bridge in Islam⁢ connecting hell ‌to paradise,and evokes comparisons ⁢to films ​like “The Wages of Fear” and “Mad Max.” Critics describe ​”Sirât” as a “metaphysical fable” and a “cinematographic bomb,” praising its⁤ bewitching staging ⁢and tension. The film stars‌ Sergi⁢ López, ⁣bruno Núñez, Jade Oukid, ‍and Tonin January.

Rafael Wolf ‌of‍ sf awarded the film a perfect‌ 5/5 ‌rating.
