Cannes Jury Prize Winner “sirât” Opens in Theaters, Blends Family Drama with Apocalyptic Road Trip
“Sirât,” the latest film from Franco-Spanish director Oliver Laxe, was released in French-speaking theaters on September 10. The film, which earned Laxe the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, follows Luis as he searches for his missing daughter in the Moroccan desert, a journey intersecting with a fleeing group of ravers and the looming announcement of a third world war.
Set against a backdrop of a massive desert rave fueled by hypnotic electro music, “Sirât” depicts Luis accompanying a caravan of escapees after police interrupt the party. As the journey progresses, radios broadcast news of a global conflict.
The film’s title references the sirât,the bridge in Islam connecting hell to paradise, and evokes comparisons to films like “The Wages of Fear” and “Mad Max.” Critics describe ”Sirât” as a “metaphysical fable” and a “cinematographic bomb,” praising its bewitching staging and tension. The film stars Sergi López, bruno Núñez, Jade Oukid, and Tonin January.
Rafael Wolf of sf awarded the film a perfect 5/5 rating.
