La Guaira to Host Women‘s Pan American Baseball Championship
La Guaira state,Venezuela, will host the Women’s Pan american Baseball Championship from September 20th to 26th. The tournament serves as a qualifier for the 2024 Women’s Baseball World Cup, to be held in the United States. This declaration was made jointly by Minister of Popular Power for Sports Franklin Cardillo, Governor of La Guaira José Alejandro Terán, and Venezuelan Baseball Federation (Fevebeisbol) President Aracelis León.
Five national teams - Venezuela, Cuba, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Argentina – will compete in the championship. Notably, the entire event will be operated by women, encompassing all roles from officiating and scoring to management and technical staff, highlighting the growing prominence of women in Venezuelan sports.
Governor Terán emphasized La Guaira’s position as the centre of women’s baseball in Venezuela, and announced that all games will be free to the public. A festive atmosphere is planned, including a cultural show and musical performances alongside the games, with the opening ceremony scheduled for 3:00 PM on September 20th, followed by the first game featuring the Venezuelan team.
The tournament builds upon a decade-long effort, beginning in 2010, to promote women’s participation in baseball, growing the sport from 14 national teams to over 115 today. Venezuela currently ranks fifth in the world and third in the Americas in women’s baseball.
Organizers view this championship as a valuable “organizational modeling” experience for future international events planned for Venezuela, including the Baseball Copa América and the Caribbean Series. Discussions are already underway with the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (LVBP) to assemble the national team for the Copa América.
To ensure accessibility, free transportation will be provided from Caracas and to various locations within La Guaira state following the conclusion of each day’s final game, with special attention given to games featuring the Venezuelan national team. Games will be played in two shifts: 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM.
