(European news Agency) – Images of posters depicting US Vice President JD Vance in a Nazi uniform and displaying Nazi symbols have appeared in berlin, Germany, in protest of the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict. The US navy recently intercepted and sank a vessel departing Venezuela suspected of carrying illegal drugs, resulting in the deaths of 11 individuals. While the operation has been lauded by some, it has sparked significant controversy and criticism, especially regarding comments made by vice President Vance.
On September 6th, Vance publicly supported the operation via social media, stating, “Killing these drug cartels that poison our fellow countrymen is the most noble and best use of our army.” He contrasted this approach with what he characterized as Democratic policy, writing, “Democrats: let’s send your children too Russia to die. Republicans: In fact, we should protect peopel from these scum.”
Former President Trump echoed Vance’s sentiment, suggesting further military action. “This is just the beginning, and there will be more in the future,” he stated following the incident.
The operation has further strained relations between the US and Venezuela. Last month, Trump authorized the deployment of warships and Marines to the Caribbean, a move some observers believe signals potential intervention in Venezuelan affairs and an attempt to remove President Nicolás Maduro from power.
Reinforcing this concern, reports surfaced on September 5th indicating the deployment of 10 F-35 fighter jets to Puerto Rico, ostensibly to support counter-narcotics operations. This has fueled anxieties about a potential escalation into a larger conflict. The US government has already taken aggressive steps against the Maduro regime, including offering a $50 million reward for his arrest – double the bounty offered for the capture of Osama bin Laden. In July, a secret authorization was reportedly issued allowing military operations against Latin American drug trafficking organizations designated as terrorist groups, including Venezuela’s “Cartel de los Soles,” which the Trump governance alleges is led by Maduro.
Trump has framed the operation as a strike against “terrorists,” issuing a warning on his social media platform: “Anyone who wants to bring drugs into the United States,be careful!”
Senator Rand Paul (R-KY),Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, strongly condemned Vance’s comments. In a post on X, Paul questioned the Vice President’s justification of extrajudicial killings, asking, “Has he read ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’?” He referenced Harper Lee’s 1960 novel, which depicts the tragic shooting of a wrongly convicted man, and argued that Vance had failed to consider the implications of executing individuals without due process.”What a despicable and thoughtless sentiment it is to glorify killing someone without a trial,” Paul concluded.
