In Pictures: Global Spectacle as September 7 Lunar Eclipse Paints the Moon a ‘Blood Red’
A total lunar eclipse captivated skywatchers worldwide on September 7, 2025, transforming the Moon into a striking shade of red – often referred to as a “Blood Moon.” From Pakistan to Ukraine adn Japan, photographers captured the celestial event, showcasing the eclipse’s dramatic effect against iconic landmarks and landscapes.
Lunar eclipses occur when the Earth passes between the Sun and Moon, casting a shadow on the lunar surface. During a total lunar eclipse, the entire Moon passes into the Earth’s umbra, the darkest part of its shadow. While the Moon is fully eclipsed, it doesn’t disappear; instead, sunlight is refracted through the Earth’s atmosphere, giving it a reddish hue. The intensity of this colour can vary depending on the amount of dust and clouds in Earth’s atmosphere. This particular eclipse was widely visible across Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, and parts of North America.
