A Gesture of Reconciliation: Park Si-Hun Returns Olympic Gold to Roy Jones Jr.
Decades after a controversial boxing match at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, South Korean boxer Park Si-Hun has gifted his gold medal to American Roy Jones Jr. The remarkable act of sportsmanship unfolded on May 30, 2023, at Jones’s gymnasium in Pensacola, Florida, revealed in a video posted to Jones’s youtube channel this Wednesday.
Jones, believing he was attending a filmed interview, was surprised to find Park in the ring, accompanied by both families. Through his son acting as a translator, Park explained his decision: “I had the gold medal, but I wanted to return it to you. She belongs to you.”
The 1988 light middleweight final saw Park awarded a 3-2 decision over Jones, a result widely disputed by observers who believed Jones had clearly won the bout. The proclamation stunned Jones, who was lifted into the air by a jubilant Park. The decision sparked accusations of biased judging, and Park himself later revealed the intense pressure and criticism he faced, even experiencing suicidal thoughts consequently.
Following the games, allegations of corruption surfaced, with documents from the East German secret police, the Stasi, suggesting judges had been financially incentivized to favor South Korean boxers. In 1996, the US Olympic Committee requested an inquiry, but the International Olympic Committee (IOC) concluded in 1997 that it found no concrete evidence to support the claims.
Despite not receiving the gold,Jones was awarded the Val Barker trophy, recognizing him as the most outstanding boxer of the 1988 Games. he went on to achieve a celebrated professional career, winning championships in four different weight classes and finishing with a record of 66 wins and 9 losses. Park retired from boxing after the Olympics and transitioned into a coaching role.
park’s gesture represents a powerful moment of reconciliation and acknowledges the widespread belief that Jones was the rightful victor in their 1988 Olympic encounter.
