Lviv, Ukraine – Ukrainian authorities have launched a murder investigation following the shooting death of Andriy Parubiy, a former President of the Ukrainian Parliament, on Saturday. The 54-year-old politician was shot on a street in Lviv, prompting widespread condemnation and expressions of grief from Ukrainian leaders.
Parubiy’s death comes as Ukraine continues to defend against ongoing Russian aggression. His career spanned from activism to high office, consistently advocating for Ukrainian sovereignty and independence.
According to the Ukrainian prosecutor’s Office, the perpetrator is being sought for purposeful murder. Reports indicate the assailant approached Parubiy while riding an electric bike, opened fire, and fled the scene.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the incident a “terrible murder” and extended his condolences to Parubiy’s family. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiha described Parubiy as a “patriot and statesman” who had “greatly contributed to the protection of Ukraine’s freedom, independence and sovereignty.”
former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, writing on Telegram, stated, “Andrij was a great man and a real friend. That’s why they take revenge, so they are afraid.” He further characterized the murder as a ”shot into the heart of Ukraine.”
